I have gone throught the thought process to develop and create the ideas of this mind map that look at and create a breif structure of the images i could take from the chosen exam question i have chosen. The four sub headings i have looked into are, Pattern, Relation to nature in human form, 'man vs nature' and texture. I belive that all of these subject relate the the question chosen and will realte to why and how.

Artist Research
Adam Burton
Adam Burton is a Photographer that is based in the United Kingdom, his photography focuses around landscape photography looking at the natural selections of the world. However he also does different side projects of work that focus on closer up images on different items and images he has seen on his travels. In his work of photography he has been demanded by a different set of clients to produce and take certain images for a selection of different business's.
Burton takes his images when the natural light is at its most peak enduring the rich colours of morning and noon. He uses a different series of flashes, lenses and camera equipment so the image itself is taken is perfect in colour, texture and layout. This gives the image a very natural look without having to enhance the colours in each photograph or editing and deleting any in particular features to produce the final piece. Adam Burton questioned that why is the photograph of a natural piece when it is then edited and played around with what cancels the 'magical moment' of the image this takes the natural look away from the final photograph.
I have chosen Adam Burton as one of my artists due the the fact he does not manipulate the photograph and tries to capture the natural moment in the original lighting set from the sun or by adjusting the shutter speed and aperture to the camera. I also feel that overall Burton is a modern photographer that focuses in the texture in nature in his close up style of photography.

Image one is of frozen ice that has managed to capture these shapes. The image is a very close up shot and shows neat curves and the direction in where ice is cracked into several parts, i feel that this image is very rich in texture as you can see all the grains and bubbles in the frozen ice. The overall colour of the image is a very dark navy blue then where the ice is divided the image is a white grey colour. The use of a very light colour and the use of the dark colour dividing the image into several sections contrasts agains each other makes the image appeal to the viewer of the photograph. I feel that in the bottom left hand corner the texture in the image is portrayed the most, the small white grains of the ice where the natural light from the sun has lightened this section, you can clearly see all the detail that takes place on the ice. Although you can see this more clearly in this section of the image, if you inspect the image closer you start too notice more tiny details along the ice what give a creative and textured feel to the image that Burton has produced.
The second image i have studied by Adam Burton is a portrait styled photograph of a close up image of a bracken plant leaf. The image combines colours of green and brown on the plant, however the greens are very bright and vivid in colour what texturise the against the copper brown colours. Due to the use of Burtons macro lens's he has captured great detail on the leaves on the plant as you can individually see each line on each leaf very clearly, this gives the viewer a sense of being close and being able to feel the plant as they could reach out and touch the image expecting it to be there.
The use of the dark background in the image that is blurred out makes the subject of the bracken plant stand out more and causes no distractions in the background of the image. This image reflects a great deal of pattern in nature as well as combining the use of texture along use of the leaves, this is because of the use of almost the plant being symmetrical. When the photograph is first looked at the direction that the branches of the plant are going creates a use of repetition what creates the illusion of a pattern being taken place in nature and the final image that is produced.
However the image does not have a great sense of layers in the image as the subject is all at one level and the camera is focused on the whole image what makes the photograph feel like an artistic print image where a background and foreground do not take place. Although this is happening i feel that this does not matter as the purpose of Burtons photography is to present texture and pattern and he has resulted in success with a very interesting image.
The third image taken by Burton i have studied in great detail as the final look of the image shows a great detail of texture that is presented in the overall image portrayed in this photograph. The image consists of multiple leaves that are sitting on the ground, all the leaves are overlapping each other however one leaf what is lighter in colour is sitting on top of the pile. The use of the leaves overlapping each other represent a great use of detail what present texture along with pattern to the image. Under each layer of leaves the under layer (background) seems to get darker in colour of leaf along with the overlapping shading from the leaves in the foreground what are lighter in colour. The leaf edges are then white in colour from the morning due from the image being taken in the morning as Burton is known for capturing images at early and late dusk points, this makes the leaves in the picture stand out from each other and gives them a type of border from the leaves they are sitting on, each leaf stands out against one and other due to the white outline of frozen water that brims the leaf.
The image as Burtons other images hold a great detail of texture along the leaf surface showing all the detail among the surfaces of where the photograph has captured, from where the leaf has a slight appearance in colour change to each lump and textured stem Burton has managed to capture the small appearances of the natural beauty of the world highlighting colour and texture he has produced this fine quality image.
The fourth image i have studied and identified the pattern and texture in nature in Burtons image. The image that is produced is taken of a super close up shot of shattered ice, the different sharp edged shapes that have overlapped and combined show a huge result and repetition what show a significant pattern in this image. The image has a darkened background where the frozen water is not cracked however where the ice is broken the colours are very bright white/light blue in colour, the colours feel almost luminous what stand out in great detail to the viewers of the image.

Ross Hoddinott
Ross Hoddinott is a UK photographer based in the south west of England, he has won awards on his photography projects based on landscape and macro wildlife photography shoots.
When Hoddinott shoots his images he is equipped with many different lenses used for different styled shootings, this produces the overall quality effect to the image. For this styled question for the exam i am going to look at and study his photos where pattern is signified the most in nature, overall i thought his use of close up macro photography in nature captured the sense of style in the natural world the most. Rather than looking at his landscape images are rather glorified and very 'picture perfect' themed even though those style of images attract the eye they do not show a great deal of pattern in nature.
The images below reflect the sense and theme of pattern, this is my personal opinion of the work of Ross Hoddinott images and has not be specifically selected or suggested by him. Each image below is very different in each way, the lighting, mood, angle, use of pattern and how macro the camera is to the subject in the image.

Each image below is very different in each way, the lighting, mood, angle, use of pattern and how macro the camera is to the subject in the image.
The first image i have studied by Ross Hoddinott is a picture of a flat segment of dark navy rook that is striped with white stone, on top of the rock lays a circle stone with a white line what connects with the other flat stone so the circle stone and flat stones connect as one using the direction and pattern of the white lines to connect the white streaks of rock. I find this photograph interesting by Hoddinott because of the simplicity of the pattern that is overlapped and the use of the close up image of the directional white lines that contrast against the dark stone.
The image feels very cold and dark in colour due the the ice-y feel of the navy blue rook, the viewer can get a real feel of the morning dusk feel of looking at the rock and being able to study it as if they were there i feel that this reverts back to the feel of texture not in design yet how the viewer feels by looking at the image produced by Hoddinott.
Image three produced by Hoddinott, is a picture of several trees bending and twisting in-between each other, the photograph is a lot further away than the other images i have looked at by other artists that produce their work focusing on texture and pattern yet i feel that Hoddinott has greatly captured a sense of pattern in the twisting trees of the forest. The image is taken landscape and cropped into a rectangle shape yet the ground and sky of the forrest is not shown in the photograph, there is a strange fog type appearance that lurks around the trees what mask out the sky. The mist in the image produces a spooky and mysterious look to the overall effect of the photograph, the nature and pattern of the trees cut in and out of the fog attracting your attention towards the foreground focal point of the trees.
The background of the image is very blurred and out of focus due to the camera and the masking fog of nature that covers any images in the background, this forces the viewers eye towards the pattern and foreground of the image what is the twisting trees that show pattern and forms of nature directly.
The third image i have studied at is photographed portrait and the image focuses on the repetition of the focus of the flower and flowers in the background in a open space of a natural woodland. The focal point of the image pulls the attention of the viewers towards the bunch of flowers in the foreground, the shape of the flower are very circular and droopy and suggest form in nature. The flowers are white in colour what stand out in the image to the darker coloured style background what is very blurred and out of focus yet you can still notice the same view of the repetition of the specific flower that blooms in the image. The style of the photograph captures and focuses on the foreground showing the specific form and style of the natural object yet the use of the photograph captures way into the background what shows a wide selection of multipull groups of flowers, because of this in the photograph the artist is showing the repetition and pattern that occurs in nature.
Image four photographed by Ross Hoddinott is one of my favourite pieces i have studied, the image is of a close up image of many mushrooms on the bark of what looks like a tree. The fungus are very white in colour and they contrast with the dark brown colours of the wood they are growing from, the bark gets lighter in colour towards the top of the image where the sun is reaching the point of the photograph. The mushrooms all grow and point up in the same direction towards the light at the top of the image, this shows that plants in nature grow towards sunlight and the needs of the habitat of the fungus, Hoddinott has captured the pattern of nature and the needs of the plant by simply showing what the plant needs. Due to the fact that the light is approaching the top of the image this creates a use of shadow underneath the white mushrooms, this again contrasts with the bright white colours of the fungus and attracts the viewers eye towards the image. The mushrooms are very detailed by the focal point of the camera, what draws the eye to the centre of the image where the fungus are centred by the camera. The texture shown on the bark of the tree near the top of the image is yet again very high quality and detailed in the image.

Leland Howard
Leland Howard focuses his photography on fine art natured photography images. His work is viewed world wide in places such as business offices, hospitals and modern homes. He says he wants his work to ease tension and rise the hope of the viewers, i feel like his images produce the sensation of these feelings due to the combination of texture and pattern in the same image.
The work of Howard's i will be focusing on is the aspects of nature in the two photographical series of images he had taken in a forrest and the desert canyons in America, i have chosen these four photos due to the combination of texture and pattern in the images.

Artist research evaluation
From studying the four artists and their photographs relating the the natural world i have picked up a style and objective in the images they have produced by noticing that images are generally close up detail that is not usually noticed before e.g form and shape in a small rock, pattern on a leaf or bark of a tree. however sometimes if a image is showing pattern it may be from a further distance but just focus on the shape of the natural object.
I feel that the general study of all the images are very repetitive and that the selection of Matt Wisniewski work is more interesting and focuses on natural objects and places them into the natural form of a person. I feel that people and humans are natural as evolution has evolved the species and as a bird would build a nest, a human has the intelligence the build cities. The materials that are used come from the planet what is natural, rocks that create buildings what come from the ground.

Idea generation
A short general photoshoot i have produced trying to capture the form, texture and pattern in the natural form.
These images focus greatly on the close up pattern of nature.

A second photo shoot.
This photoshoot was a wider range of images that focus mainly on pattern and form in the natural world. I have taken the photographs in local woodland area near to my home.

Water
I have taken these images to try and capture to style and pattern that is shown in the movement of water. To capture these images i had a tripod set up and lowered the shutter speed to the movement and flow of the water would almost be blured what would create a pattern. However the images i have produced capture too much lighting what almost whites out the images.
I feel that because i can not control how much light is contrasted onto the the section of the landscape i am trying to capture, going at a later time of day nearer to night would make the image look better and not as washed out and over saturated because of the open shutter speed.
However i feel that the image of the rock in the water what is pokeing out is a great final image, the form and depth of the rock is shown going deeper into the moving water until it can not be seen and the pattern and direction of the white foamy water constrasts very greatly with the dark greeny black rock. The rock is also very texturized and you can see lots of pattern and detail on what lies onto the rock. When i took this image i adjusted the focal point of the camera onto the rock and got it very highly in focus. However a slight movemement of the tripod could of affected the detail of the texture on the rock to the long open shutter.

Black & White Series
I have taken the following images in black and white. I have adapted my camera settings so the photo that is taken is produced in black and white colour, i find that this is more effective than taking the image in colour and later on editing it in photoshop because you can see how the light and shadow contrast against each other.
I prefer the style of working with images in black and white because the image sometimes looks more professional and artistic in the way the viewer looks at the final photograph. I also feel that the colours, lighting and shadow all work together to create different shades of black and white what makes the image show a more directional use of form.

Vegetation (B&W)
During my research and observation of the forms, textures and pattern of the natural world i had realised it was mainly based around plants and other vegetations. I have decided to capture these images in the first segement of the black and white series i have taken because i feel that the objects and matter of the plants show a key element of pattern texture and form.
Shells, Rock & Bone (B&W)
I found that shells and bones and the hard dence material in nature such as shell, bone and rock show a very directional use of pattern and a deep hollow sense for form. I found this very appealing to photograph, and i thought that photographing it in black and white would be better as the harsh light and hollow shadow contrast greater together where the colour of the object is subtled into with the shadows.
Skull
I have taken images of this sheeps skull first of all because there were many different layers and sections what could be photographed. The detail and texture what lay beneeth each layer of bone enamal looked extrordinary to the natural eye and i wanted to capture this as the skull was originally part of an animal and the skull what holds the thoughts and processes of all animals in the natural world.
I had placed and postioned this object in a dark room with a light that postioned on the object, i did not use a flash on my camera as i found that this reflected the light to greatly of the object and the detail and layers could not be captured.

Low shutter speeds (1/5) F20
I have tried to vary the style of my images by adjucting the shutter speed in my camera, by lowering the shutter speed of the devise i knew that the image would be blured where the camera has moved and the object has stayed still. This has produced the three images below what i think are the best three images i had taken out of the many. When i pressed the button of the camera, i then quickly moved the camera itself in the direction. From the images you can see the original point of where the camera had been placed and then the blured ghostly like effect that worked on the skull. I had the room set up very dark with a dim lit light over the object of the skull what was white in colour. I have had the same lighting style set up as the previous shoot above, but just moved the position of the camera into different places.
I feel that the images below i have produced are very ghostly and uniqe, as it looks like the soul of the skull of the animal is running away. This makes the three images seem very spiritual and out of the world type feel even though the object its self is part of the natural world we live in.
The strongest image out of these three would be the image positioned in the middle. This is because the object of the skull sat in the center of the portrait photograph and the outline of where the camera first captures the outline of the image is very strong and from where the shutter of the camera is left open the blur and movement of the camera is more faded. This effect is like the picture was painted and has been smudged with some material.
I could also however produced this same style of image using a normal shutter speed and standard camera effects to create a crisp clean image and then by using the smudge tool with a lower opacity (around 12%) i could drag sections of the image to the direction i wanted it to go. Although this process in photoshop would take longer i feel that the style of the photograph and the amount of blur and smudge of the image could be directially positioned into place. because using lower shutter speeds and moving the camera around the object is almost about trial and error.

Skyline (B&W)
I have tried to capture the forms in the cloud focus with the first two photographs however i feel that the second image is more successful than the first. The third and fourth image i have tried to capture the pattern of the trees creating a silhouette on the skyline, I feel that the portrait images of the different trees is more detailed and shows a better compisition than the landscape image of a seccond tree.
Human Features (B&W)
I have taken these images around the style and focus of the human body parts. The images consist of a close up focus of individual sections of the human body. I personally think that humans are part of the natural world however the things mankind creates such as cars, clothes and buildings do not fit in with this link. Many sections of the body look like or resemble sections of nature. The form of muscle, the texture and pattern of fingerprints are all very natural in the world we live in however wrapping the body with clothes that are made from processed material is not natural. The naked body that evolution has created is organic.
The images i have taken above are of several body parts of the male body, i have tried to focus on the areas of where pattern form and texture are shown best on what i find is the natural parts of the human anatomy.
Focus on shadow and light (hand) 1/80 F22
These images are of the human male hand, i have tried to capture a harsh darkness to these images where the light only shines on a few small areas of the subject of the hand. This could show how the human race are barely left in the natural world and are slowly fading into the darkness as man kind started of as part of the natural wonders of the world but have polluted it with technology, cities and artificial products.
Mankind overpowers
These images relate to how mankind holds and keeps onto the natural world. For instance the industrial works of mankind producing many toxic wastes, building cities and burning fossil fuels has a price to pay on the natural landscape. Forrest are knocked down for material, animals are farmed and yet mankind holds onto what is left of nature because we know we are killing the environment. This is shown in these series of photos as the female subject is shown as mankind holding onto what is left of the natural world and landscape what are the bunch of flowers she is holding.
Edited images
I have edited the three images below by layering the first original image first and then placing a second image over the top. I then used the earser tool with different opacities to delete sections of the second layer what then showed the first original layer behind.
The first image i have produced is a portrait photograph of a long forearm and clenched fist of a male subject. The photograph is captured in black and white making use of a dark room and the style of black and white photography. The image what lays beneeth this layer is a close up image of tree bark what is taken so the focal point lays at the closest point nearest to the camera.
The reason and style of this image is because mankind holds the power to how much the natural world is left and created, mankind plants trees and chops them down. However the plants keep humans alive, the oxygen that trees produce is the main reason the natural world is still left around. I feel that humans keep the natural form of the world alive due to the reasonal aspect that we can not live without nature. Even though cities are being developed, light pollution covers the stars and forrests are planted and then chopped down is not a natural state. It is hard and difficult to go to a place where you can not see the destruction that humans have created, by building houses, cities and artifical satilights what ruin the night sky.
The clenched fist of the man in this image shows how humans are gripping onto very tightly of what natural wonders there are left, the small section and area of the tree bark shows that the natural world is slipping away and the darkness in this photograph is the death and emptyness mankind will have left if the natural world is destroyed.

Human comparison
This image is lots of different images cropped and styled to show how simular the human body is to elements of the natural world. i have found and captured styles of the human body what show form pattern and texture and then captured images of natural objects showing how simular they both are. As a human being shows many states of natural form, pattern and textures on the body and i seem to find people seem to forget and take how beautiful and wonderful the human body looks like when not wrapped in artifical wool and symbolised for a fashion statement rather than being what humans are. Natural. When you look into detail at the body you can see the textures on the skin, hair and so much more. The forms of limbs and other muscluar elements of the body show great depth and even how a baby is formed from nothing. skin cells that divide to create more and more of a person.
If i were able to i would do very macro shots of close up images through microscopes of the biological pattern that is created in the skin, muscle and brain images. However with the equipment i own and have been given i am not able to do so.

Exam pieces
Skulled grass
This photo was edited by using the two images below, i had edited the two images in photoshop together to create the final piece what sits above this text. First of all i changed the orignal skull layer to a portrait styled image i did this because i felt that the image fitted better and created a better compisition when the edited photograph was portrait. I then used the brush tool and filled in the spaces on the skull image where the background was grey in colour and changed it to black, as a block colour image as a background stands out to the viewers eye better. After i completed this process i put the grass layer beneeth the skull, i then selected areas of the skull rubbing out many of the white sections what then brought through the second layer behind what was the green grass. By using a low opacity on the brush i was able to slowly select what areas of the grass came more through than others.
When i was editing this photograph i wanted to create a stencil styled image simular to how an artist creates a stencil for spray painting, this block like effect on the skull and use of colour and center styled compisition makes the final image very eye catching to the audiance who will view this photograph.
The final image looks very modern, crisp and indipendant this will attract the range of most viewers and a wider range of people will be able to enjoy this image.
The meaning behind the image i created is about how the death of the natural world is growing and that very few natural elements are around the big surround cities that over power the natural world. This is shown in this image by focusing on two natural elements what are the skull of the sheep and the living green grass, however the power and realisation of death that the skull portrays should be very powerful on the viewers. The empty darkness shows how little of the natural world is left, the green plants that sit inside the skull represent that human life would perish without the oxygen that plants create.
The artist that influanced me the most on this photograph would be Matt Wisnieski as his image through the natural world are edited very simular, i have taken into his account of editing building layers of images and overlapping them together to create a modern intresting piece of work. However i feel that the grassy background is very textured in itself what relates to the work of Adam Burton as his work focuses on pattern and texture. Burtons work is based on not taking images and editing them and i feel that the grassy background image i have used is very natural in lighting and colour what portrays aspects of his work in my final piece i have produced.
If i were to produce this image in an art gallery i would make the image big, the edited photograph would be around 5ft tall in an art exibition or an enviroment study program. I would create my image this size so that people would notice the image better and the photograph symbolises too how much natural world is left over. The message i am trying to portray is key and an important factor of the big blue planet we live in, therefore it would be key for the human race to take this realization into account.
If it were also possible with this image i would like to create a big skull made from a white material and then be able to project the rest of the image onto it, when the viewer has to look at the image they would have to press and hold a button what creates the rest of this project. This would be key and make a wider range of the population realise that mankind is holding nature in place, and without it the human race would perish without oxygen and cause death to our species and many others.

Rock Grape
layerd images below, shows from and shape of grape and texture of rock almost looks like pebbles on a beach
tryed to show the message of nature is deeper, more complicated and shows complicity of layers within life and the natural elements. this is shown by the depth of each grape and the use of there being many.
i feel that this image is not as eye catching as the first however it shows a great detail of pattern, texture and from in nature
I would produce this image onto a concreate slab or ink dye it onto slate. as it almost looks like stone already.
follows the pattern of Ross Hoddinott
If i were to develop this image i would get different sized natural objects so the photograph has a better compistion.
